The Edge of Language
Series of six, 2025

These works on canvas are part of a larger series that draws loosely from lectures Roland Barthes gave in 1978 (The Neutral). In one of these, translated from the French, Barthes describes the neutral as a borderline thought, one “on the edge of language”. Over the last several years, my studio practice has revolved around an exploration of narratives - how and why and whom they control in both private and public domains - and how we unravel them.

While working within this framework, I’ve focused lately on language, or as I think of it, this edge of language, the neither this nor that of communication. Where are we if language is removed or incapacitated, undermined? What’s left, and what does it say? The other works in the series elaborate on these questions through drawings, textiles, prints, photographs, audio, video, and blind embossing.
